Basic Training

Camp Rucker, Alabama
Basic Training Center for Army Nurses
Fourth Service Command, August 1945

Twelve Army nurses have successfully completed this year’s basic training. A five-day intensive course consisted of a series of lectures and physical activities. Trainees learned dismounted drill, completed an 8-miles hike with full equipment in a mountainous terrain and obstacle course, engaged in calisthenics every morning and took part in weapons training. They also attended lectures on uniforms, hairstyle & make-up and wound suturing. After the graduation ceremony, all nurses treated themselves to a well-deserved dinner!

At this point we would also like to thank the members of the Czech 1st Infantry Division for providing wartime vehicles and field kitchen. Our group was also supported by our friend Lise from Holland, who conducted research on women in re-enactment for her PhD project.
